It’s Always About the Story!
It’s not surprising so many former journalists make an easy transition into the world of PR, government communications, and marketing. They know how to tell STORIES!
Smart, successful CEO’S and politicians have realized they need experienced, skilled story tellers to effectively communicate their vision, amplify the value of their brand and craft the right message tailored to the situation at hand. (My friend Erin Trafford @its.erintraffod has made a very successful career out strategic storytelling.)
But here’s a question- Can you tell a compelling story about your own organization to inspire, connect, and empower your existing employees---AND also attract new talent?
Are you a business storyteller? If you are not, you need to be. This skill needs to be part of what you do as a leader.
What does the company MEAN to you? Working in a family run business – if it’s a great family run business – the story is baked in. Your STORY writes itself; it’s about the family, and the company legacy. If that’s not the case, then you need to fine tune your business story to create a storytelling culture.
Yes, as a leader this is on you, and your HR team but ultimately you want every employee on board telling the company story- no- BOASTING about the company story! It becomes ingrained and is celebrated during the big wins, …bolsters staff during hard times, and builds resilience during times of upheaval.
Consider the enormous growth in online shopping during the pandemic, companies that invested in technology and innovation were able to not only maintain, but attract new business, those with a culture of curiosity, ingenuity, and a “can do “ attitude also weathered the storm very well.
The leaders of these companies have amazing stories to tell to continue to empower their employees and attract the best talent out there. Conversely the leaders of companies that were forced to lay off employees, shut down divisions, and relocate staff also have an opportunity to tell a powerful story. Done right, that leader can generate trust by telling their business story. One of rebuilding, a new vision and opportunity.
It about your business story….learn how to do it well.
