The State of Work

The state of work has changed forever. The pandemic has proven that.

Business resiliency has taken on a new importance when it comes to the long-term success of companies, more so than efficiency and growth I would argue. The world continues to be a volatile place, with new and emerging variants disrupting supply chains and so, business models continue to be rewritten.

Successful businesses and effective leaders will need to maintain agility for years to come, to manage the constant disruptions in the office. Just this week for example a high school in Etobicoke was closed because of a Covid 19 outbreak, and a former colleague of mine was forced to return to remote work, while looking after his daughter who was exposed to a positive case in the classroom. (She’s okay, tested negative btw). Companies are not messing around, they maintain strict Covid19 health and safety protocols, which creates an enormous ripple effect.

The new business model is based on a flexible and portfolio approach. Leaders have realized the benefits of having freelancers, contract workers, part timers, and more technology and automation to fill the gaps. But how do you keep employees – full time – and otherwise engaged through all of this? How do you foster company loyalty? What is the story you tell those employees seeking certainty and stability when staff and schedules are constantly changing?

Providing meaningful work is key, when employees believe their work matters to the overall goal and long-term success of the company, they have “buy in” and will weather the storm with you. Having proven systems and processes in place, helps your staff navigate change with ease. Investing in your people with skills training and educational opportunities generates a huge amount of trust and loyalty. And finally  regular communication with your staff –from freelance and contractors, to part time and full time employees will show you really do want to understand their needs and concerns.
